A.WAKE Loves… Emma Watson

Feminism has garnered some negative connotations over the years, most of them being displaced, uninformed, and prejudiced. Beliefs that Feminism is just an accepted hate group, that Feminism means that women have no use for men, or the belief that every Feminist is a lesbian. The list unfortunately goes on. However, Feminism, as we like to see it, is a movement with a very simple and honorable goal: for women and men to be seen as equally valuable, competent, and worthy in the eyes of society.

This is why A.WAKE loves Emma Watson. Her speech given at the UN for her campaign #HeForShe has left an incredible mark. She spoke so clearly and so beautifully. She was confident and poised as she spoke pointedly about a woman’s right to make decisions about her body, to be paid the same amount as her male counterparts, and to be respected in all the ways a man is respected. She spoke not just for herself, not just for the woman who was denied a promotion, not just for the woman who was victim of sexual assault and made to believe it was her fault, not just for the woman who is condescended because she’s a stay-at-home mom, but for every single woman who has no voice. In the US, in the UK, and across the world.

Her speech was met with applause and affirmation, but it has also been met with ugliness. A sign that, even though what she is championing us toward is equal human rights, there is still so far to go. Take a watch or listen to her speech if you haven’t already, it is illuminating and equally inspirational. If you feel called to take action, visit the website for her campaign http://www.heforshe.org to learn more about how you can contribute.

We’ll see you all this Friday to hold space and to celebrate the women in our community.
